killers of a certain age by deanna raybourn

alex’s rating: 8/10

in deanna raybourn’s thrilling killers of a certain age, four retired assassins are looking forward to an all expense paid cruise and some much needed r&r after 40 years of service to ‘the museum.’ they soon discover their former employer has different plans in store - their termination! billie, natalie, mary alice and helen must get to the bottom of this but their sixty year old bodies aren’t what they were when they were first recruited by the museum. this was such a different plot & one i thoroughly enjoyed.

reminders of him by colleen hoover

alex’s rating: 8.7/10

break my heart in two again colleen!!!! oof reminders of him is a great read that keeps you interested the whole time. it follows kenna on her difficult journey to gain custody of her daughter after spending the first four years of her life in prison. when she ends up tangled up with a strong and dashing bar owner, it complicates things more than she could have imagined. albeit a little unrealistic, it’s a fantastic read by a very talented author.

american demon by daniel stashower

alex’s rating: 7/10

i picked up this read while in dc this month because it instantly caught my attention. in the 1930s, cleveland was terrorized by the torso killer, a madman who beheaded victims in an area known as kingsbury run. police were baffled at the crime scenes and had trouble pinning down suspects. mind you, this was when finger printing was really just beginning to become common practice. around this time was when elliot ness, famed for putting al capone behind bars, scored the job of safety director for the town. if this man could lock up the greatest american gangster, solving bizarre murders should prove easy. spoiler alert, it’s anything but. this book gets into the weeds on historical details at times but was overall a really interesting read!

in the end by kelsey p. whitney

alex’s rating: 8.9/10

y’all know i love a romance novel and indie writer kelsey whitney knocked her debut book out of the park. i loved this for a variety of reasons: 1). part of the story takes place in west virginia (my home!!) 2). it’s a romance that’s reminiscent of the notebook (cue the tears) and 3). auburn university is featured throughout the book (and i have such fond memories of when my brother went there!) it’s the type of book you’ll read cover to cover - i did!!
